Hi Daisies!
It's Skeptics day so why not share with you one thing that people don't believe in...Ghosts. I wanted to share with you 4 Haunted locations that you can visit that are near my home town North Adams, Massachusetts. I wanted to share some locations that are only a few minutes away, and share some history with you about these locations and what possibly is the reason they are haunted.
The Hoosac Tunnel (West End and East End)
There are two locations that you can go to, to visit the Hoosac Tunnel, one being in North Adams, Massachusetts, and the other side being in Florida, Massachusetts. The construction for this tunnel began in 1851 and was eventually completed in 1857, but throughout this time around 200 men (could be more or less) died. The Hoosac Tunnel is also known as "The Bloody Pit" because of the central shaft incident. Inside the center of the tunnel is a 1000 ft escape that was also used to bring workers in and out of the tunnel, as well as bring down cargo for the workers or even equipment. On October 17, 1867, an explosion occurred within the shaft that broke the hoist to the elevator. This caused the cargo on the elevator to fall, crushing some, some were thrown by the explosion and rocks fell from the walls. This caused some to not be able to escape and get out to safety resulting in some deaths.
**IMPORTANT** BE CAUTIOUS WHEN VISITING AS THE TRAIN TRACKS ARE STILL ACTIVE!!!
Me and my love at the Hoosac Tunnel
The Houghton Mansion
This mansion is located right in North Adams, Massachusetts near the center of town. This home was built in 1890 by Mr. Houghton, the first mayor in the town, where he, his wife and daughter would live along with their servants. Fast forward a few years, it is August 1st, 1914, and Mr. Houghton, his daughter, and some family friends decide to go to Bennington, Vermont just simply for a pleasure drive. Mrs Houghton though, decided she wanted to stay home. When in Pownal, the roads are a little narrow so being careful, Mr. Houghton's servant, Mr.Witters, was being very cautious. When they stumbled upon horses on the side of the road Mr. Witters was sure to go around them, but unfortunately making the corner the vehicle tipped, falling off the road down the hill where it flipped 3 times ejecting everyone except Mr.Houghton's daughter. While rolling down the hill the vehicle landed on the female friend killing her instantly, the men however were able to escape with minor injuries. Mr. Houghton's daughter though was seriously injured, and sadly passed later on that day from her injuries. Mr. Widders was upset about everything that happened and later that next day he killed himself, 10 days later, due to a broken heart (they say, but some say his injuries were much worse than they thought) Mr.Houghton sadly passed.
Here is a fun fact, the brick that you see along the mansion found actually came from the Hoosac Tunnel, which some believe actually adds to the paranormal activity that occurs there.
The Everett Mansion at Southern Vermont College
This mansion is located right in Bennington Vermont on the campus's grounds. This mansion build started in 1911 and was completed in 1914, it cost approximately $2 million dollars to build. Mr. Everett had built this as a summer home for his wife and kids so they could escape the city life of DC. After visiting a few summers, it is said that Mr. Everett had begun an affair with the nanny they hired, who soon later pushed his wife over the balcony then killing herself not long after. From the '40s to the 70's it was said that not far from the mansion there had been some secret cults near the grounds that could also have added to the paranormal activity that occurs here at the mansion.
Glastenbury Mountain
Located in Bennington Vermont, this mountain is known for being very mysterious. These mysterious occurrences include some disappearances, UFO sightings, paranormal activity, and a cursed forest. Some say it is haunted by many different things and people, two of which being individuals who were murdered, one in 1892 and the other in 1897. Now there were 5 disappearances that have occurred on this mountain, and these are very mysterious in that essentially they just vanished, no trace of them anywhere. Just like you see in the movies, the footprints just stop. These disappearances are believed to be the cause of what they call "The Bennington Triangle". People have said they've also seen some aliens or UFOs landing on the top of the mountain and some have also said they've seen a creature that resembles the Jersey Devil.
